Ash Wednesday

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Have you noticed that when we do something wrong, when we sin, or disobey God’s will - we like to keep that in secret. We don’t want others to know about it, and this is because we don’t want others to think about us negatively. However, when we perform good deeds, when we do something good for others, then we kind of like when others acknowledge the deed and even thank us for it. And today, on Ash Wednesday, on this first day of Lent, Jesus encourages us not to perform any good deeds in order to be thanked for them, nor to be noticed. We are called to perform good deeds out of love toward another person, especially that person who needs our assistance. God who sees everything will reward us for that. We are called to pray, but also not to show to others that we often are praying, but because we want to spend time with our Lord by talking and listening to Him, by adoring Him. And God who sees everything will repay us. We are called to fast, but not for our own benefits - losing some weight, for example - but because we want to show God that with His help, we are able to fight with temptation and become stronger and stronger in that battle. And God who sees in secret will repay us.
