Feast of the Holy Innocents, martyrs

You have probably heard the expression that ‘we are pilgrims in this world.’ It simply means that our life here is a journey that leads us to another life, a better life - eternal life in Heaven. And so, by going through this life, just like pilgrims, we must make many sacrifices. We also must live according to God’s commandments, loving God and our neighbor. As we all know, it is not an easy task since we are constantly tempted to sin, to do things in a contrary way to God’s plan. Many times, we have doubts and struggle with our faith. In other words, we have to ‘earn’ that eternal life with God by being good and faithful pilgrims. Today our church presents us with the feast day of Holy Innocents, those little babies that were killed by Herod. And we may struggle with the questions - why is this world unjust, why did those children have to die, and why are so many children needlessly dying today? I also struggle with this, but I also envy them Heaven. Every child who died goes straight to heaven. They don’t have to go through the struggles of this life. They don’t have to take that long and difficult pilgrim that we all must take. Holy Innocents, pray for us pilgrims.
