Fourteen Sunday in Ordinary Time ‘b’

We come to church every Sunday (at least we should). We recite the same prayers, we hear the same bible stories and because of that, some of us little by little become uninterested in these things anymore. I have heard many times from people that they stopped going to church because the church is boring and that they hear the same stuff all the time repeatedly. But on the other hand, when certain difficulties come our way, then we seek Jesus and expect Him to perform miracles in our lives. Jesus came back to His native place, but instead of being welcomed, He faced resistance. They couldn’t accept the fact that He is the ONE, that He is the Son of God, because they knew Him too well. At least they thought they knew Him. As the gospel reading concludes, we hear Jesus bemoan the fact that “he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.” In a similar way, we may think that we know about all about Jesus, and that the church repeats itself, that there is nothing new we can discover in our faith… so, if we do that, we distance ourselves from Jesus and His power.
