Friday after Ash Wednesday ‘c’

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

All Catholics (with some exceptions regarding age and health) are invited to abstain from meat on each Friday during this Lenten season. And why do we practice this? Because we remember Jesus’ suffering and death on Good Friday, so we want to also make at least a small sacrifice to honor that day. The Lord reminds us today that it is not so much about what sacrifices we make, but to think about why we are doing them. Perhaps you don’t eat meat at all, so this kind of sacrifice does not make any sense for you. That’s why Jesus teaches His disciples that fasting is an important practice. It helps us to fight temptations and makes us stronger in saying ‘no’ to our bodily desires and pleasures. The Church invites us this Lent to fast, and not only fast because we should, but to fast in order to make a sacrifice for the Lord who made the highest sacrifice for each one of us.
