Friday of the 28 week in ordinary time ‘b’

Many of us think that the worst tragedy that can happen is death. Many live in fear of losing this present life. We do all kinds of things in order to stay healthy and to protect ourselves from any kind of dangers. That’s why we visit the doctor, get surgery if something needs to be fixed. We avoid dangerous places and activities and install alarms on our properties. Nothing wrong with that. All of us -- we want to be safe and protected. But today Jesus reminds us that there is something worse that could happen than death. He says: “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.” It is OK and important to protect our lives in this world. Our lives are precious, and life is a gift from God that we need cherish. But we also have to keep in mind that we need to protect our eternal life, and to make sure that that life is also sound, healthy, and well protected from any danger.
