Friday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time ‘c’

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

In the gospel today we read that “The Pharisees approached him and asked, ‘Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?’ They were testing him.” They were not so much concerned about the issue of divorce, but they were testing Jesus, trying to catch Him saying something wrong, giving them satisfaction or maybe even reason to humiliate Him. But of course, they could never catch Jesus saying anything wrong. I must tell you that when I was younger, I used to be ‘testing’ Jesus also. However, I was testing Him in a different way - I would for example pray to God: please let me pass that important test at school and I will go to church each day next week. Or give me this or that and I will pray the rosary each day. Until much later, I realized that I too, just like those Pharisees, was testing Jesus and His presence in my life. But God does not work that way. We shouldn’t put His love for us and His presence to the test. He always provides for us in one way or another; He cares for us and loves us. There is no need to put that to any test.
