“Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” What do you and I need in order to be saved? You may think, just like that man who presented this question to Jesus, that you try to follow all the commandments, you pray, go to church, fast, confess your sins, and so you do everything that has been prescribed by your faith to do. But Jesus may say to you: OK, that’s great, but you are lacking one thing. “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” Sometimes we may think that in order to be saved, to inherit eternal life, we must obey God, and do everything in order to please Him. But then we forget that God also wants us to do good to other people. We are called to serve God but also His people. That was something that this man from the Gospel couldn’t do -- he was proud of fulfilling all the commandments and of serving God, but there was one thing he was lacking -- in his love, he had no room for another person. We need to love God and our neighbor.
