Monday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time ‘c’

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Today Jesus invites us to ask ourselves an important question: is what I am doing for my faith enough? Is it enough for Jesus, is it enough for me? And how is your faith today compared to 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or one year ago? Our life is a journey during which we must increase our faith, strengthen our hope, and multiply our love for God and for other persons. The honest man from the gospel reading today was hoping that because he followed all the basic commandments - not stealing, not committing adultery, not killing, and so on - he would go to heaven. “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” However, Jesus is very clear - this is not enough. You must do more, much more. You can’t just repeat the same prayers you have learned when you were young; you can’t just go to church each Sunday; you can’t think that because you don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t cheat that this will make you Jesus’ disciple. We must follow the commandments, pray and practice our faith. All of these are the tools to make us a better person. Our prayers, the sacraments, and the gospel must change us, make us better, should help us to bring Jesus and His love to others. That man from the gospel could not make that next step. Can you?
