The Centurion from the gospel reading today was so humble, and he didn’t want to treat Jesus like one of his slaves who would do for him whatever he asked for. That Centurion was able to admit that Jesus is above Him and everyone else. When he asked the Lord to heal one of ill servants, Jesus agreed to go with the centurion to his home, but he refused saying: “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come here,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it.” As a Centurion, he could give orders to his soldiers and servants, but he understood that with Jesus, it is different. We can’t give orders to our Lord; we can only approach Him with humility and faith, believing that He will do for us what we are praying for.
