Most of us Catholics feel more comfortable talking and praying to Jesus in our beautiful churches, or when we see The Lord present in the holy host, in the Eucharist. It is easy to recognize Him in the scripture readings. However, many times we miss His presence in another person. Especially in those we don’t particularly like or care about, or in the homeless, abandoned, immigrants. The same mistake was made by so many people when Jesus was walking on this earth. They couldn’t see in that simple man - the Son of God. In the gospel reading today, the disciples asked Jesus: "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And Jesus said that he already came, but they didn’t recognize him. Just like many who didn’t recognize and didn’t believe in Jesus’ words. Jesus told His disciples that: "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands." During this Advent we are waiting for the Lord to come. However, the Lord is among us. We just need to open our hearts and souls to be able to see and recognize Him, especially in another person.
