Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph, and we are given two Gospel readings to choose from. I chose to meditate on the Gospel of St. Luke, when the twelve-year-old Jesus was left in the temple, and His parents found Him after three days. Those of you who have children can imagine how terrifying that must have been. Parents may start blaming each other: I thought you were watching him! She was with you, not with me! I wonder if Joseph and Mary were blaming each other too. Luckily, they found their son happy and sound. The two commandments that we have are so very important: Love your God and honor your parents. “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. Jesus, the Son of God, again is telling and showing us that we need to love, honor, and respect our God and our parents - ‘He was obedient to them.’
