Thursday of the First Week of Lent ‘c’

Writer: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Jesus said: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Wait a second, you may think. How many times have I asked God for a certain thing, but it didn’t happen? So, why didn’t God give me what I wanted, and how come He remained silent? I must admit that there are times when I also thought that way. But now, Jesus tells me that if I ask, then it will be given to me. Yet when I do ask, I often don’t get what I want. However, we need to notice that Jesus didn’t say - ask and I will give you whatever you ask for. No. Instead He said: “ask and it will be given to you.” ‘It’ will be given to us but maybe not exactly what we wanted. Why? Because God wants always what is best for us. We just need to trust Him. I’ll give you an example - there was a young man in the church who stayed after mass to pray. I have never seen him before. When I was about to lock up the church, he was still in prayer. So, I approached him and asked if everything was OK. He said that he had not been inside a church for years, but he came now to pray for the healing of his sick mother. I am not sure if God healed that man’s mother, but the fact that this young person came to pray was certainly a miracle. Maybe God didn’t heal his mother, but perhaps God changed his heart, which was far more important to God. We may not understand this today, and we may get angry with God at times because we didn’t get what we wanted. But one day we will understand why God acts this way. “Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish?”
