Thursday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time ‘c’

Writer's picture: Fr. KrisFr. Kris

Again, Jesus is very clear today. Obviously, we shouldn’t take His teaching literally and go out and cut off a hand because it caused us to sin, nor pluck out an eye because it caused us to sin. No. Whether we want to hear that or not, today Jesus reminds us that there will be a day of judgment. Unfortunately, some of us keep forgetting about that by continually hurting others or even worse, causing others to sin. “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” What is important to know here is the fact that Jesus is not trying to scare us, or to make us scrupulous in life. Rather, Jesus is warning us, telling you and me that if there is something in your life that needs to be fixed, do it now, while you still have time. We all sin; we all make mistakes. But at the same time, if we humbly approach our Merciful Lord and ask for His mercy, then we don’t have to worry. But if a person doesn’t look to God’s forgiveness for sinful actions, then it might be too late to ask for it on the day of judgment. Only what is pure and holy will enter Heaven.
