Jesus said: “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.” When I read this, I think about all of those people in high positions of leadership in politics or in our church who mislead us by their bad behavior and by not following what they call us to do. But does Jesus speak only about them? No, Jesus wants you and me to think if we practice what we expect others to do. Think about those moments when you were disappointed in your child for not going to church on Sunday or stopped praying. But do you faithfully practice your faith, do you pray often? Or, you don’t talk to your sister for years expecting her to make the first move and call you and apologize. But maybe you should make that first move. I too must be very careful when, as a priest, I give homilies inviting others to follow God’s commandments and become good and holy people, but I myself don’t make any changes in my life. When we preach, we need to practice what we preach.
