Tuesday of the Thirty Second Week in Ordinary Time ‘b’

In Jesus’s time the parable about the master and servant was easy to understand, since many rich people had one or more servants. “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’?” I think that Jesus is trying to remind us - His listeners - that we are the servants of one Master, God. However, our service to God and to others will never end only with a single or even a few good deeds we have done towards others in this life. As long as we are here, in this life, we can’t simply sit down, take a rest, and say - my service to God is done, now I can relax. No. God wants us to serve Him until our last breath. If we do that, He will welcome us into His heavenly banquet, to His table. “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’”
