“After the five thousand had eaten and were satisfied, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.” When I read this, I just naturally think about all of us coming to church during this Christmas season. Those of us who come to mass regularly, those who are visiting, and even those who come only once a year or for special celebrations. Why do we come to Jesus? We come to be ‘satisfied’, which means - to be fed by Him with His word and with the Most Holy Eucharist. It is just like that crowd in the desert that was fed by Jesus so they could gain strength to go and speak about Him. Now, we are coming to the Eucharist to receive the same strength that will enable us to go and proclaim the Good News. We need Jesus, we need the Eucharist, we need to be satisfied by the Lord.
