Freedom is a wonderful gift and privilege. However, being free does not mean that a person is allowed to do whatever he or she wants. Unfortunately, some people think that they have freedom to live however they want: that they have the freedom to end a human’s life, that they have the freedom to live with whomever they choose and act however they want. There are people who go through this life selfishly doing whatever they want to do. I always wondered what Jesus meant when He said: “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Jesus wants us to use our gift of freedom, not selfishly doing what we want, but by following God’s commandments, helping others, always growing in our spiritual life, and by deepening our relationships with God and another person. ‘Narrow gate’ may not be as easy as the wide gate, but certainly much more rewarding.
